Abide Studio the Gallery

Abide Studio is located in the historic Factory at Franklin in Franklin, Tennessee.  My studio is open to the public whenever I am there.  Most weeks that means Tuesday- Saturday will find me at the computer or at the easel working on something.  However, since I do the art show thing, I may in fact be on the road or at an art show in your neck of the woods.  Check my website at http://www.deborahgall.com for my current schedule.

My work ranges in style from impressionistic landscapes to non-objective abstracts.  I work exclusively with a palette knife and most of my work is impasto (high relief texture) in nature.  Each piece begins with a layer of texture, either a randomly applied layer of modeling paste, or a highly textured application of paint mixed with medium.  At that point the color is “blocked” on the canvas.  Only in my mind’s eye is the final piece evident at this stage.

Development of the painting involves multiple layers of paint.  I use a palette knife that is about an inch and a half long to develop all pieces.  By the time a painting is complete I estimate that approximately 10 layers have been added, the final layer being metallic paints that bring out the highlights of the piece and dance across the canvas when it is placed in its home environment.

My newest work involves additional layers of tinted gel medium sandwiched between the first layer of paint and the layers of wet over dry detail.  The overall effect is softer with a washed, glazed, almost encaustic (painting with wax) look.
